Camp Toccoa
Camp Toccoa

We had a great hike and visit to Camp Tocoa and Currahee Mountain after Chritmas.

Garrett (Lt Col McAdams) organized the outting, first with a hike up Currahee, 3 miles up, 3 miles down, as noted in the Band of Brothers series. We made the climb and enjoyed the incredible views from the top, and touched the marker at the top. We didn't come close to the 48 min completion time that the troops were required to meet but each of us gained an appreication for what the troops accomplished.

The view from the top.

Survey marker at the top.. This one was placed in 1975. The original marker is in the Museum in Taccoa.

Our little 'Band of Brothers'.

We then started our 3 miles down. Another wonderful hike with impressive views. There were several more groups of people making the hike up as we were heading down. There were aslo a few 'cheaters' (as Chipper called them). driving up to the top, at least they were enjoying this area.

At the bottom I walked around to the memorial area. A very impressive display honoring the paratroopers that trained here.

The shape of a parachute , blue sky with lines and white canopy. with markers for each of the groups.

We then headed into Toccoa for lunch at X-Factor Grill. Great food, seems the grape salad was a big hit as was the Currahee Chicken.

Then to the Currahee Military Museum housed in the old rail station and addition. Lots of memorbilia of the history of Stephens County and Camp Toccoa. The most impressive is the addition that houses the horse stable from Aldbourne, England where the paratroopers were housed prior to the D Day invasion. It was disassembled, and flown to America and reassembled in this addition of the museum.

One of the stables is setup as it was in England with four soldiers to a stable.

It was a great day with a hike, good food, good company, and history lesson. Highly reccomend a visit to Camp Toccoa, hike Currahee, food in Toccoa and the Museum.

Thanks Garrett for a great adventure.
